■先週、トム・クルーズのおかげ夕張からメロンが届いた。と書くと飛躍しすぎだけど、話は、快速旅團というサイトで拝啓、トム・クルーズ様というコラムを見つけた４月にさかのぼる。快速旅團は、他大学応援団の先輩・金子元さん・ゆいまるさん夫妻が夕張駅近くでやっている旅人系ライダー支援のお店。夕張映画祭に行った際に遊びに行って以来、メールでの交流が続いていて、サイトにも時々お邪魔している。「拝啓〜」のコラムの最後に「どなたか英語に訳してトム・クルーズさんに伝えてください」とあったので、「トム・クルーズにコネはないけど」と翻訳だけ引き受けることにした。

■「拝啓」と「敬具」以外はまったく別人となって出来上がった訳文は、快速旅團サイトにDear Mr.Tom Cruiseとしてアップされた。でも、ここから先（トム・クルーズへの伝言）が長い道のりだなあと思っていたら、「驚くことに早速反響がありました」とゆいまるさんからメールが来た。「『ラストサムライ』の助監督（日本人かな？）の方に訳文を渡せそうです」と続き、「まだ雲を掴むような状況でトム・クルーズ氏に届くか分かりませんが、ちょっとだけトム・クルーズさんに近付けたかなと思ってます」とのこと。もしも、もしも、手紙が届いたら、間接的にトム・クルーズとつながれるわけで、わたしも興奮。18年前のわたしをしびれさせた『トップガン（TOP GUN）』は、ハリウッドで最初に観た映画だった。
