ジェニーに日本の民話を聞かせて欲しいと言われて、「鶴の恩返し」や「竹取物語」を紹介したことは前に書いたが、そのときジェニーからフィリピンの民話を聞いた。こんな話である。
王様が一人娘の王女の結婚相手として、二人の青年を選んだ。そして「どちらでもよいから、お前の好きな青年と結婚しなさい」と王女に命じた。聡明な王女はそこで、二人の青年をテストすることにした。王女は海岸の崖の上に二人を連れだし、こう述べた。
「私がこれから海に宝石を投げます。先にこの宝石を見つけた方を、私の夫、つまり将来のこの国の王として迎えたいと思います」
王女が投げ入れたのを見届けて、二人の青年は海に飛び込んだ。しかし、二人ともなかなか宝石を見つけることはできなかった。そして長い時間が経過した。数年後、青年の一人がやってきた。彼は打ちひしがれた様子で、「残念ですが、みつかりませんでした」と王女に告げた。そして肩を落として引き下がった。
それからしばらくして、もう一人の青年が顔を輝かしてやってきた。彼の手には宝石があった。彼はそれを王女に渡しながら、「私が見つけました」と誇らしげに言った。
数日後、王女の結婚相手が発表された。国民はその結果を聞いて驚いた。王女が選んだのは、宝石を手に入れた青年ではなかった。宝石が見つからずに打ちひしがれていた青年の方だからだ。
ジェニーはここまで話してから、「shin、どうして王女は宝石を手に入れた青年を選ばなかったのかわかりますか」と私に聞いてきた。私は「I have no idea」としか答えることができなかった。
「王女が海に投げ入れたのは宝石ではなかったのです。それは塩の固まりでした。海の中で融けてしまったのです」
「つまり、宝石を手に入れたと言った青年は嘘つきなわけですね」
「そうです。そして王女は、正直な人間が好きだったのです」
王女もまた、宝石探しをしていたのである。そして王女の求めていた宝石はその正直な青年の心に中にあった。そしてそれは「誠実さ」という心の徳である。ジェニーが語ってくれた民話を私はそのように理解した。
さて、これも前に書いたことだが、私は「鶴の恩返し」という日本の民話を、少しアレンジしてやさしい英語で書いてみた。そしてそれをジェニーに読んで聞かせた。私が初めて英語で書いた文学作品である。セブ留学の記念として、ここに引用しておこう。

The story of a beautiful crane
Once upon a time , on a countryside in Japan , there lived a poor young man alone .
One day , he found an injured crane in his trap . The crane was so beautiful that he couldn't kill it . He set it free quickly .
That night , a beautiful young woman visited his house , and asked him for a few days stay . He found her injured . He allowed her to stay in the barn next to his house .
In a few days , she was cured of her injury . She was grateful for his kindness , and said " I am a good weaver , please let me weave a cloth for you ." The young man allowed her to use weaving tools in the barn which his mother had used .
His answer made her eyes bright , but she added one thing with serious voice . " Don't look into the barn during my weaving . If you do it , I have to leave you ." He answered " I never do such a thing ."
Next morning , she finished her work . She handed him a cloth . The young man said " I've never seen such a beautiful cloth . I want to go to the town , sell it , and gain some money ." " Please do it ." she said .
That evening , he returned with much money and good food . He was happy and very proud of her . And he found her cheek a little pale . He said " What is wrong with you ?" She said " I am fine . I will weave another cloth for you ."
She weaved a cloth at that night too , and she continued weaving every night . She looked more and more pale , but he was not aware of it . The weaker she was , the richer he became . He made many friends , and he began to play around every day and night .
One morning , she told him that he used to be a very kind man , but now he seemed to be a different man . She couldon't understand what he and his friends were talking about . But he didn't care of her words . He was thinking just how to be rich .
That night , when he came home after drinking with his friends , it was a dark midnight , he found a weak light coming from a small hole of the barn . He approached the hole and looked into the barn .
He saw a crane weaving a cloth . It was picking up white feathers from it's body and weaving a cloth . The crane looled very thin , weak and tired .The young man was upset and bewildered . He went to his house with storong fear .
Next morning , when he went to the barn , there was no women nor crane . In the barn , he only found a beautiful cloth and himself with an enpty and miserable mind . After crying for missing her , he recognized that he got wealth but lost something precious forever .
