Amazonで注文したK/Hの本が届いたので、
早速やってみた。

いやぁ、これ面白い。
真面目に取り組もうと思う。


◇英語の聞き取り能力自己診断（力試し）

Let me talk about the confusion that happens with regards to Americans going from one company to another company.

・"regards"の意味が取れなかった。
・「会社を転々とすること」ではなく「会社を変わる場合に起こるConfusion」という解釈をした。

Since World War 2, Japan has built itself up as a country, and many, many companies started their operations and became successful.

・"built itself up"は聞き取れていない。後半はOKだったので大意は取れている。

And the idea that you could go to work for one company and stay there for an entire work lifetime(was a popular, ...) continued to be a popular notion.

・"could"が聞き取れていない、もしくは頭に残っていない。
・"notion"の意味がわかってないので無視して、ただ「一般的である」と解釈した。
・"continued to"も聞いた側から忘れているので解釈には反映されていない。

That used to be the case in the United States. But about 20 years ago, things began to change.

・聞き取りは問題なし。"be the case"は前後の文脈より「アメリカでも同じ」と解釈。

And frankly this may not be (a...) a good characteristic of Americans, but Americans are not loyal to their company like Japanese are loyal to their company.

・"may not"が聞こえていない、もしくは頭に残っていない。
・また、文をつなぐ"but"も全く聞こえていない、もしくは頭に入っていない。
・そのため、聞こえた箇所のみで、「それはアメリカ人の良いところでもあるが(!)、日本人のような忠誠心がない・・・」という解釈をしてしまった。（致命的！）

And part of that is because many times the companies have not been loyal to the Americans or(to the...) to the workers.

・意味的には問題なく解釈できているようだが、"many times"の部分は聞き落としている。
・もちろん、現在完了形であることもさっぱり意識に上っていない。

But it is a challenge for many Japanese companies working in the United States to hire and retain Americans.

・この文は聞き取りも解釈もパーフェクト！

And the reason,(within the...) at least within the enginieering field right now... Many Americans will come to work at our company knowing that it's a good company, knowing that they can learn a lot, and knowing that if they are successful, they can have a good career.

・まずひっかかったのは、"knowing"。このせいで、現在の一般論か仮定の話かわからなくなってしまった。多分ここが"thinking"だったら、解釈は間違えなかったと思う。
・"come to"も上手くニュアンスが取れていなかった。
・長いので途中で前を忘れる。"successful"とか思ってる段階では、"good company"は頭にない。ぼんやりと「前向きないいイメージのことを言っていた、ような気がする」という認識。

But they also think (that) "If it is not successful or if I don't like it, I can always go somewhere else."

・これも、聞き取り解釈共にOK。

That is the mentality of most Americans who are coming to work.

・やはりここでも、"come to"なわけがわかっていなかった。
・音は聞き取れているけど、頭では"who are working"と思っていて、「職場に入ってくるアメリカ人の考え方」ではなく「ほとんどアメリカ人の働く姿勢」と理解してしまった。

一文ずつ聞いては止めて、自分で日本語要約を口に出しそれを録音する。
この結果を元に自分のタイプを診断するのだ。

私の判定は、慢性サバイバル英語型＆構文力課題型ってところだろうか。

今までも薄々わかっていたことだけど、
こうやって細かいところまでチェックしてみると弱点がよくわかる。
かなり面白い。





そうそう、どうでもいいけど、メモ。
先週、何度か祖父が夢に現れた。
祖母が来ることはあるけれど、祖父は珍しい。
お彼岸だから、ということにしておこう。

こういうのって、
別に信じてるわけでも思い込んでるわけでもないけど、
特に否定すべきことでもないし、証明のしようもないし、
まぁどうでもいいわけで、だから「お彼岸」って理由は丁度よい。
