【解説】 この言葉は一般的に「結果」「結論」と訳されるが、用法には注意が必要だ。consequence とは何らかの行為や行動の結果として引き起こされた事態を指し、常に原因との関係において言及される。従って、単なる現象としての結果（result）とは異なる。consequence を result で置き換えることはできない。複数形の consequences で用いられることが多い。

【解説】 profile は「姿勢、態度、世間の注意を引くさま」という意味。high-profile（著名な、目立った）と low-profile は（目立たない、低姿勢な）はメディアや日常生活で広く使われる表現。high-profile case（世間の耳目を集めている事例）、high-profile journalist（著名なジャーナリスト）のように、事物や人の名が後ろに続くことが多い。いずれも形容詞と名詞の二つの用法があり、名詞の場合はハイフンが入らない。

【解説】 deteriorate と worsen が物事の良しあしを表す語であるのに対し、decline は高低を尺度とする語で、「沈む」「低下する」が本来の意味。派生語・関連語は名詞 declination（下降、衰退）と、やはり名詞の declivity（下り勾配）。
※「断る」の意味で出てきたけど、ピンと来なかった。
