■ スミス氏山陽路を往く
基礎的な英単語を使って、郷土を紹介するシリーズです。スミス姓は
アメリカで最多数といわれ、中年の平均的アメリカ人を想定しガイド役
には、日本でもっとも多いといわれるスズキ君、まじめな25才の青年が
当ります。初対面は岡山駅です。

鈴木 ようこそ岡山へ スミスさん！
スミス やあ あなたがスズキくんです
ね お会いできて たいへんうれしい！
鈴木 私も光栄です きっそく岡山をご案内しましょう
スミス 空の色がすばらしい
銘木 新幹線では お疲れになりませんでしたか？
スミス とんでもない！ なかなか快適で、駅弁もおいしかった
鈴木 ここから２キロほど行くのですがタクシーに乗りましょうか？
スミス 歩いて30分くらいかな？ 私は歩くのか好きだ 君はどうかね
？
鈴木 私も好きです 歩きながら 説明しましょう これから行こうと
いうのは後楽園です
スミス コーラクエン？ 王選手がホームランを打つところだね
鈴木 いいえ野球場のあるのは東京です 岡山の後楽園は 日本三大庭
園のひとつなんです
スミス ずいぶん昔に建てられたんだね？
鈴木 ええ1700年に 池田綱政という殿様が造らせました
スミス じゃあ アメリカよりも古い
鈴木 庭園の隣にある岡山城は もっと古いんですよ 14世紀の中ごろ
に着工したといわれます
スミス コロンブス（1446？〜1506）も生れてなかった！
鈴木 だんだん手を加えて 完成したのは16世紀末と伝えられています
ほら 見えるでしょう
スミス あの黒い建物が そうかね？
鈴木 はじめ四層六階の天守閣だったんですが 戦災で焼けたので 三
層六階に再建されました
スミス 戦争は いつも悲しい引き算だ
鈴木 姫路城は白いので 白鷺城と呼ばれ 岡山城は 烏城と呼ばれま
す。
スミス いま思いだしたんだが 岡山駅の前の広場に 子どもと動物た
ちの群像が立っていたが あれは何かね？
鈴木 子どもは 桃太郎という名前で
伝説に出てくる英雄です その話は五大民話の一つなんですよ
スミス 神話の時代かな？
鈴木 有名になったのは 50年前てすね 筋書きは18世紀にほぼ完成し
ています
スミス その話を聞きたいものだ
Suz:Welcome to Okayama, Mr. Smith
Sm :Oh, you must be Mr. Suzuki.
It's a pleasure to meet you!
Suz:I'm glad to meet you. too. Mr. Smith.
I'd like to show you around Okayama, now.
Sm :What a beautiful color the sky is!
Suz:you must be tired after the long ride on the
Shinkansen.
Sm :No, not at all. It was quite comfortable and
the box lunch I bought at the station was good, too.
Suz:Do you feel up to the walking about 2 kilometers
or so, or should we take a taxi?
Sm :I guess it would take about 30 minutes on foot,
Wouldn't it. Well, I like walking. How about you?
Suz:Yeah me too. While we're walking. I can tell you
a little about Okayama. We're golng to a place called
“Korakuen”.
Sm :Korakuen?
Isn't that where Mr. Oh hit a homerun?
Suz:No, I'm afraid not. The Korakuen with the baseball
field is in tokyo. The Korakuen in Okayama is
one of the 3 big gardens in Japan.
Sm :I suppose it was made long, long ago.
Suz:Yes. In the year 1700, Lord Tsunamasa Ikeda had
it made.
Sm :Then it's older than America.
Suz:Okayama Castle, next to the park, is even older.
Construction on it supposedly began around the
middle of the 14th century.
Sm :Man, Columhus hadn't even been born yet at that
