パトリシア・A.マキリップの未翻訳本を読みはじめる。2002年初版、世界幻想文学大賞（2003年長編部門）受賞作品。表紙絵の拡大はこちら。
【Kinuko Y. Craft】の絵がきれい。いやもう、英語がクソ難しくてめまいがしてくるけど、この人の隅々まで神経が行き届いた、凝った文章は大好きなので苦にはならない。つか、マキリップの本は冒頭は特にちゃんと読まないと何が何だかわからなくなるしな･･･。
話の舞台は"Ombria"という王国。王子Royce Greveが崩御し、幼い息子Kyel Greveと、その家庭教師（でRoyceの愛人？）のLydeaが後に残された。王子Royce亡き後、大叔母のDomina Pearlが国と宮廷の実権を握り、Lydeaは愛する幼いKyelから引き離されて、下町の暗闇の底にある父の家へ5年ぶりに帰ることに･･･。
表紙の女性が右手に持っている扇子（fan）が、4ページ目にして早速登場。これはOmbriaを描いた風景画？らしく、これを掲げながらKyelに向かって（ガチョウの指人形を持った）Lydeaが語る。
