＞法王の権威を示す印章「漁夫の指輪」と
パリウム（白いウールの肩掛け）。

パリウムは、かつての冠の代わりに法王の宗教的権威
を示すもの。
ベネディクト１６世のパリウムは、紀元１世紀のならわしに
さかのぼり、約２．４メートルの長さ、
キリストが受けた傷を象徴する５つの赤い絹の十字架が
ししゅうされている。
　赤は処刑されたキリストの血の象徴。
　縁は黒く、信者の象徴である子羊の足を意味しているという。
　白い羊毛は「神の迷える子羊」である信者を象徴する。

「漁夫の指輪」は伝統的に、法王が公的書簡の押印に使っていたが、
　今回は指輪と印章は別々のものにする。
　デザインは共に、漁夫だった聖ペテロ（初代法王）が
　船から網を打つ姿が刻まれている。

バレンツィアーノ大司教によると、
指輪のサイズを合わせる際、ベネディクト１６世は
「２４号がいい。『１２』の倍数だから」と言った。
「１２」はキリストの使徒の人数。


＞新法王に選ばれたベネディクト１６世（７８）
の就任ミサが
２４日午前１０時（日本時間同日午後５時）すぎ、
バチカンのサンピエトロ広場で行われた。
ミサの説教で新法王は「教会は生きている」と
信仰の有用性を指摘したほか、
全ての信仰や人々との対話を呼びかけ、
前法王の路線継承を示唆した。
ミサには約５０万人が集まったとされている。

＞信者代表１２人がひとりずつ法王の前にひざまずき、
　忠誠を誓った。
　枢機卿３人と司教、司祭、助祭が１人ずつ、
　修道女と修道士が１人ずつ、韓国人夫妻と子供、
　堅信礼を終えたばかりの若い女性と男性だった。

＞説教では
「教会は生きている。
　（前）法王が病んで亡くなった悲しい日々の中でも、
　教会は生きているというこの素晴らしいことが、
　改めて明らかになった。
　そして教会は若い。
　教会の中には世界の未来があり、
　私たちに未来への道を示してくれる。
　教会は生きている。
　復活された主が信者に約束された喜びを
　私たちは経験している」
　　　と、カトリック信仰の意義を強調。

＞一方で、カトリック以外のキリスト教信者をはじめ、
　「偉大な精神的伝統を共有し結ばれている」ユダヤ教徒に
　「特別の挨拶」を差し伸べるほか、
　「（カトリックを）信じる者も信じない者も全て、
　　　全ての人々に、
　　　力を増す波のような思いを向けている」
　　　　　　と述べた。

＞また前法王が１９７８年１０月の就任式で使った
　「恐れるな」という言葉を引用。
　前法王は冷戦下でキリスト教を弾圧しようとする
　共産国家に向けて
　「恐れるな！　キリストのため扉を大きく開きなさい」と
　呼びかけたことに触れた。
　前法王がその後も、２６年間の在位中にたびたび繰り返した
　「恐れるな」を、新法王は世界の若者に向けて
　「恐れるな。キリストを恐れるな。
　　キリストはあなたから何も奪わず、
　　　あなたに全てを与えてくれる。
　　キリストへの扉を大きく開き、
　　　そして真の命を見つけるだろう」
　　　　　　と呼びかけた。

Benedict XVI installed as pope

VATICAN CITY (CNN) --
Pope Benedict XVI has been formally installed at an
open-air Mass outside St. Peter's Basilica, Rome,
before a crowd filled with
pilgrims and dignitaries --
and a worldwide television audience of millions.

＞
"Let us do all we can to pursue the path toward
the unity you have promised,
" he said. "Grant that we may be one flock and
one shepherd.
Do not allow you net to be torn.
Help us to be servants of unity."

In one of the most symbolic moments,
Benedict was given his Fisherman's Ring
and a woolen pallium or shawl
-- both symbols of his papal authority.

Benedict XVI said that his predecessor
Pope John Paul II was
"at home" among the saints in heaven,
but stopped short of calling for his canonization.

>
Benedict, speaking during his installation homily,
said that on John Paul's death,
"we could call upon the saints from every age --
his friends, his brothers and sisters in the faith
-- knowing that they would form a living
procession to accompany him into the next world,
and into the glory of God."

"We knew that his arrival was awaited.
Now we know that he is among his own
and is truly at home,"
he said, as the crowd of tens of thousands broke
into applause.

>"It is my desire to continue this fruitful work
which was started by Pope John Paul the Second,"
Benedict told an audience of members of the media
Saturday, adding he would
"confront this new epoch-making era of mass
communications and use it to the benefit of
the gospel."
