オーツは1960年代にデビューし、グレイス・ペイリーと同じくらいの長いキャリアを持つが、作品の数は天と地ほどの差があり、ペイリーが片手の指で足りるくらいなのに、オーツは非常に多作で、書いている内容も多彩。また書くだけでは飽き足らず（？）、プリンストン大学で創作のクラスを教えている。

オーツって、柴田さんも村上春樹も訳していたんだ！あ、真野さんも！
ミステリマガジンなんかにも載っていたのね。ふうん・・・と思っていたら、オーツはたくさんいろいろ書いているけれど、一番得意なのはゴシック小説で、Rosamond Smith名でミステリーも書いている「ゴシック作家」であるという説明を聞き、何か今までもやもやしていた部分が一気に晴れた感じ。『フォックスファイア』と『エデン郡物語』しか読んでいないが、この人は何か普通じゃないという感じを抱いていたし、なるほどそうだったのか！と納得。
今回のテキストは、非常にグロテスクな描写や、猥褻なので授業では訳さないという部分などがあって、ちょっとびっくり！の作品だったが、「ゴシック作家」として捉えると、なるほどという感じ。
