The United States is the only nation to have qualified for every U-17/U-16 World Cup since FIFA began the event in 1985, and will be looking to extend that streak with a 13th consecutive appearance in 2009. It won the inaugural CONCACAF title in 1983 and won a second crown nine years later in Cuba.It has finished as high as fourth at the World Cup (1999) and fifth three other times.

Cuba comes to the CONCACAF championship as the Caribbean champion, having won five its six games and drawing the other by a combined score of 29-3. The Leones del Caribe won the CONCACAF U-16 crown in 1988 and became the first Caribbean nation to qualify to the World Cup in 1989 in Scotland. Cuba also competed in a second World Cup, in Italy in 1991.

It starts the 2009 championship with a 10-match unbeaten streak in the tournament, and has qualified eight times for the World Cup (second most in CONCACAF).
