Despite an opening loss to Guatemala, los Cuscatlecos recovered to beat Panama and Belize, winning Central American qualifying Group 2 and earning its berth in the eight-team CONCACAF championship. This will be the 17th appearance in the CONCACAF finals for El Salvador, which in 1964 became the first to win the regional title, but has yet to qualify for the FIFA U-20 World Cup.

Itfs match with St. Vincent & the Grenadines will decide the eighth and last berth in the field. Honduras has won two CONCACAF titles (1982 & 1994) and has qualified for FIFA U-20 World Cup three times.
